Question: Does an abortion raise my risk of breast cancer?
Answer:This is a controversial issue. The theory: When you become pregnant, your hormones, including estrogen, surge, which stimulates the cells in your breasts to prepare for lactation. When you have an abortion, your hormones drop, interrupting this process. Some anti-abortion experts claim that this increases your risk of breast cancer. But most scientists -- including those at the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society -- say the interruption is harmless. They also consider the research that has suggested any connection flawed. And studies done in Scandinavia, which document every abortion there, failed to find any association.
